What is Shabby Chic?

I have had quite a few of you ask me what is shabby chic and what is the difference between that and romantic cottage decorating according to her brand nothing? I have been informed by her legal department that "Shabby ChicĀ®" is a just her brand that covers her line of furnishings and not to be used to describe a style and that it should be referred to as romantic country or cottage style by everyone else except her. The "brand" is definitely more shabby and not so much chic.

Romantic Cottage: Is casual and comfy but is a little more frilly, feminine and a little more fussy. Displaying vintage pieces and collections you love. Vintage furniture with chippy, peely paint or painted pieces in light or dark colors. Lots of floral in light or dark colors. Vignettes and displays of flowers, framed photos, collections filling all the nooks and crannies of your home. Slipcovers out of floral prints or a combination of floral and solids or upholstered pieces. Ruffles, lace, hand painted roses and beaded trims are all part of romantic cottage decor.

I hope the definitions helped clarify a little.Shabby chic these days is a buzz phrase that gets used a lot to describe all kinds of cottage decor. It makes it confusing when you are trying to figure out your style and be careful how you use it.

My home is definitely my own version of chic style because everything fabric that comes in my door goes straight into the wash machine, if it survives I use it, if it doesn't..bye bye.
