Shabby Chic Is So Passe.....
I have had a few designers say this to me recently and I would like to comment.....
White is never out.
Shabby Chic never really caught hold in the 80's and 90's.
Reusing and recycling will always be in and really good designers can take anything and build a room around it and can make anything look new again.
Shabby chic has many interpretations, I try to offer information and ideas for all of those interpretations. Shabby chic in the past was more shabby than chic and thought to be about chippy, peeling paint, white and pastels, vintage and antique pieces with good bones painted white.
The new shabby chic is more chic than shabby, no more peeling, chippy paint, vintage pieces with cleaner lines and less ornamentation painted in whites, darks or whatever color you prefer. Both paired up with comfortable, easy to clean furniture with or without slipcovers.
Pictures are courtesy of Better Homes and Gardens
Both styles are based on using vintage or antique accents (recycle) that you love, inherited or bought at flea markets, yard sales and estate sales and giving them new life in this modern world. So no matter what your age or which interpretation you love, there is something in shabby chic or should I say shabby rose chic for everyone!

These are just a few pictures of whats available in the market today , but almost every manufacturing company has a shabby chic, cottage line and it is very pricey to buy these pieces that are designed to look like shabby vintage pieces. Manufacturers typically know their market and if people weren't buying this up then there wouldn't be entire companies dedicated to this look.
You can call it what you want but it is definitely shabby chic style.
Passe I think not......

I have to say that I prefer the old look. The new stuff looks too manufactured. The whole reason that I adore shabby, is because I like that it looks used, and loved, and that it could tell a story of where it's been.
My neighbor laughes at me for my love of it. She just doesn't understand why I love the style of furniture she grew up with because they were poor and couldn't afford new things. :)
