Shabby Chic Decorating - Painted Wood Floors

photo from Decor8

Painting your floor boards is an excellent way to change the look of your room. But if everything in your room is in neutrals you can get a punch of color by staining or painting your floors in a dark wood tone and adding a white shag or fur rug to warm up the feel of the room and add a little more modern feel.

I sold a few things to Rachel Ashwell at the last two shows at Brimfield. She, of course, coined the phrase "shabby chic" and wrote several books about it. The concept originally dwelled on elegant French, fancy, and lightly colored (mostly white)country furniture and accents with flaking paint or flaws that added character to the pieces. The look recognized the beauty of the imperfections and patinas. I believe that this concept has degenerated over the years into the "paint any old crap white and the public will buy it" belief that rules the market today. When shopping for this look, take a closer look at the intrinsic beauty and value of the underlying antique article. You will be far happier with your purchase if you do. Good luck hunting for antiques. Now is the part where I plug my websites www.EuropeAntiqueTrip.com and www.antiquesNut.com

I don't think it was ever about flaky paint even to Rachel Ashwell, she has always had someone fine tune her pieces by sanding down the flakes and waxing or painting them. I have always decorated in that style even before the 80's, I have always loved ornate pieces and repurposing things that no longer work as they are, I called it flea market eclectic and swap meet chic. I totally agree that it has gone more shabby than chic but it is being introduced to a new generation and is being done in more modern terms and definitely more chic. I also stand on painting vintage pieces that have seen better days only and leaving beautiful antique wood pieces in their original patina. It pains me to see that someone has taken a gorgeous antique and a piece of history and covered it with paint in any color. Plug away and thanks for stopping by Joe.
