What's Your Style?
The color white is timeless, it never becomes outdated like other colors.White works in any home, large or small and with any style. The mood of your white rooms can be changed easily and inexpensively by changing out accents and accessories. White is clean, pure, fresh and airy and when done right, doesn't even get close to being boring or sterile.
I have noticed there are a few general categories of style that clients are drawn to the most. You may find you are one or a combination of these style.
* Romantic White: The style is generally relaxed and pretty. Vintage and modern furnishings with curvy lines combined with touches of glamor.Chalky whites and creams with only hints of color in blue, pink and lavender. Fabrics tend to be floral, faded floral and rose prints with a vintage feel. Window coverings in transparent fabrics, like lace or voile. Accessory choices are usually crystal chandeliers, silver trays, candles, vintage rose paintings and mirrors. Chipped and distressed furniture are admired above those with a clean finish. Also known as Shabby Chic. Described by many designers as taking a trip through your grandmother's house.
* Beach Cottage White: The style is casual and simple.Furnishings are easy to care for with simple lines. This look uses lots of planking and bead board. Whites, blues and greens. Fabrics are canvas, terry cloth, jute and textured cottons and nautical stripes. Rattan and painted wicker fits in this style along with rustic and natural pieces. Accessories like seashells, sea glass, candles, vintage lanterns and trunks. Whitewashed and bleached wood finishes.
*Classic White: The style is elegant and refined. Tradition is a big part of Classic white. Quality above quantity. The look is all about the details. Moldings, dado and picture railing.Understated wall color in muted whites and grays. This look usually includes black or deep browns for contrast. Accessories are ornate and antique furniture, piles of books, stone urns, chandeliers, marble, painted shutters and stone urns. * Country White: The style is Comfortable and informal. Simple furnishings and living in harmony with nature define this style. Combines antique with vintage furniture, distressed finishes and original stained pieces used along side outdoor metal furniture. Whites mixed with off whites and ivory. Accessories include french grain sacks, burlap, accent pillows, area rugs, rustic accents and natural touches. Everything that helps bring the outdoors in and reflects the changing of the seasons.
* Modern White: The style is simplistic and beautiful. Less is more, why have a dozen mediocre pieces that you settle for when you can own one really exquisite piece you absolutely adore?. Furnishings are a fusion of soft curvy lines with simple and sleek. Contrast the old with the new and the hard with the soft. Colors are white and grays but mix the finishes; glossy, satin and raw. Upholstered pieces with fitted slipcovers. Accessories metals in bronze, silver, stainless steel or chrome. Wood pieces, vintage or new, mirrored or painted in glossy white and mixed with woods with a dark chocolate paint or stain or use natural woods for a lighter contrast. Fabrics and finishes provide texture, organic linens, wool tweeds, solid weaves or raw silk. Add interest with graphic art, textured accent pillows and colorful accents.
