Design Star goes Shabby Chic

For all you HGTV watchers out there, next week Design Star is going Shabby Chic. Their assignment is to do a suite for country singer Sarah Evans. She loves shabby chic so I will be watching with my usual critiques and will especially be interested in the judges take on shabby chic. I don't think any of them are fans of the style. So tune in Sunday, July 6th @ 9:00 pm ... you might see an idea you can use!

Shabby Chic Style

I have just taken a break from finishing up this months issue of "Everyday Chic" and I wanted to let you know that I have been a little behind on my decorating part of this blog and promise to do better, This last two weeks it has been from 101 to 112 degrees everyday until today. It is so hot that the paint actually dries before it hits the object I am painting, very frustrating, the garage is even too hot to paint in! I found this photo at www.bhg.com . It is a great place for inspiration and ideas.

This is a gorgeous example of a shabby chic style living room, too many ruffles for me but it is white and comfy with pops of color and lots of texture. You can see that they have kept the lines clean and opted for minimal accessories. I love the painted paneling in the back. Paint is always a very easy fix and relatively inexpensive, I have covered up ugly paneling in a few homes with just a few coats of paint and even bad paneling looks great! When you have paneling it is sometimes glued onto drywall or plaster and although you may think pulling it off would be easier, sometimes it just opens a whole new set of problems. Just be sure you clean and sand or primer first!

Romantic Country, Shabby Chic and Shabby Rose

I received my copy of Romantic Country today and although the cover looks inviting I am a little disappointed that they keep using and reusing photos and stories that they have used before. It seems they feel only a few homes and businesses are worthy of mention in this magazine. I love the format of this magazine but really hope they come out and play with the rest of us who have wonderful businesses and homes dedicated to the romantic style. I know from talking to many of you that there are a great variety of homes ready for the opportunity. I am not sure I will be offering this magazine any more but the good news is they have opened it up to subscription finally for all of you. Go to www.harris-pub.com and you can call, fax or get the newest one on the stands which has a subscription card in it.

If you haven't visited ShabbyChic.com lately you must travel on over there and see that they have made over their website and that Rachel's high end design line is now available directly from her site. I love the new look!

Bedrooms and Peely Paint

I reworked my bedroom weekend before last and have just a few more things to complete it. I am waiting for hubby to put mirrors in a couple of antique frames, I picked up a vintage mahogany dresser at a yard sale that was supposed to replace an antique chest I have been using to put T.V. on and store clothes in, someone had painted it white so I was just going to have hubby move it in from storage. Instead when he brought it home I saw a little bit of paint peeling up and gave it a little pull. So now I would like to share what happens if you don't primer your projects first before painting:

It just kept peeling up. The good news is that it will be easy to strip, the bad news is I have to find time to paint my own projects. If you don't do a little cleaning, sanding and primer before you paint, in a short amount of time your projects will peel and all that time invested in your project will be for nothing.

I am also looking for a white gauze bed skirt for my California king bed to finish off the bedroom. So when I have the room completed I will share pictures with you and this dresser will become a DIY Chic project for my website.

In the meantime I don't want to leave you with a picture of ugly so I am sharing a few pics of gorgeous bedrooms I found. The first two are from www.bhg.com and the last one is from www.shabbychic.com .

Although I love the all white of the last picture, I have found that in my bedroom, it needed a little tone on tone and I have softened it with a blend of whites, off whites and beiges.

I am not much of a gardener but I am so proud of my one hydrangea, this is the third year and it is just full of beautiful buds and blooms.

In pink of course .............I think it is doing great for the desert. It takes some extra care here to keep it alive. So far so good!

I spend my free moments thinking up different uses for the things I collect. I have quite a few mirrored dresser trays that have been packed away. I pulled out a few of my favorites, the rest I will be selling in my flea market. I decided to use one on my coffee table as a candle tray.

I placed three candles of staggered sizes (one with texture) on the tray and scattered a few pale pink glass cabochons I found at Michaels. It makes a beautiful centerpiece as is, but when the candles are lit it is gorgeous and very romantic.

Shabby Rose Chic Monday Show and Tell

Some of my shop sisters at Make Mine Pink are doing something called Monday Show and Tell where we all share what we have been up to during the week. I am joining in and will be giving you a look at new and vintage items or DIY Chic© projects I will be adding to Shabby Rose Cottage. I have quite a lot to list between letting go of some of my own collectibles and my flea market and estate sale finds. I have a whole room filled with things to list (and then there is my storage).

I have had so many requests for the pitcher and wash basin in my logo photograph that I have been keeping my eyes open for them and have found two gorgeous sets to offer at Shabby Rose. This is a beautiful blue and white....

and this gorgeous white set with a grapevine detail. Both have that beautiful crazing that comes with age.

Shabby Chic Sofa

You can turn any sofa into a shabby chic sofa and for my new visitors you didn't get to see my sofa makeover, so I am going to share it once again. I specialize in redesign and that means work with what you have. Here is a sofa:

It is a comfortable sofa, it is older, long enough for my 6'4" hubby to lay on and built really well. The style and upholstery is definitely dated but the arms of the sofa have that chunky shabby chic feel. The first thing I did was to remove the two back cushions.

I used a store bought slipcover. This one is actually a matelasse slipcover from the "Simply Shabby Chic" line at Target. Unfortunately they don't have this one available anymore but you can do this with any sofa slipcover. Before I had this slipcover I used two vintage chenille bedspreads in the same way, so you can use what you have or look for something like it while out bargain hunting. I don't believe that style has to cost a fortune.

Then I gave it a more modern shabby chic feel by adding square pillows. I wanted my pillows "squishy" the middle one was my test pillow. I stitched up a square slipcover (the one in the center) with velcro on one end so it could be removed easily and washed. When I do my pillow covers I am not fond of the pillow openings on the back because I like to be able to use both sides. I stuffed the cover with two feather pillows for the perfect amount of squish!

I actually added two more pillows and a couple of accent pillows since then that I found bargain hunting in an olive green chenille cover. I used what I had as far as fabric to see if I liked it and I love it. So over the last year I have picked up matelasse bedspreads at yard sales and thrift shops so I could make all new pillow slipcovers in white matelasse. That is the project I am working on now and I will share it with you as soon as I complete them.

Now give it a try with your own sofa. If you don't sew you can shop for Euro pillow slipcovers or shams in 26" - 30" size and they will work just as well. Just be sure they are washable or it defeats the purpose of a slipcover

It is funny I redesign and style clients homes but mine has been totally neglected and is the last on the list, my husband has done custom glass and mirror for years but we always seem to have a cracked window somewhere in our home that never gets fixed and I have never had custom mirror in my own home.

On the other hand I have to tell you that in my younger days and unfortunately my children think the same way now, when I would get locked out of my house, (don't pretend that has never happened to you!) my first thought was break the window.....I know a good glass man.....lol

Pink Roses for the Giftbox

I have a white kitchen but I love the little hint of pink to look at while I am cooking. I wonder if I had lived in the 50's when pink was so in, if I would have gone over the top with pink. I remember my Nana had one of those dusty dark rose nubby upholstered sofas in her home for years. I loved sitting in it even though it was a bit rough on the skin. I can't remember what that fabric was called, so it's time for a little research I think.

Those that have been here for a while know my pretty little boxes are never empty......

Call me old fashion but I still use a hand held can opener, pink of course. I don't really care much for electric appliances sitting out on my counters.

and a matching veggie peeler!

Both are from Cuisinart and are comfortable to use. They look great in the box and now you can see the inside design. See where I am going with this? That's right retro pink in the kitchen! My hubby actually likes these because they have substantial handles and are easy for him to grip compared to what I had. You know for the once a month he helps me or tries to cook something ... lol
